Find A Doctor: Introduction

mother and baby

The current policy at BC Women's Hospital mandates that women with low risk pregnancies can only deliver at the hospital if their home address is in the City of Vancouver. The only exclusion to the policy occurs if the woman is a long term patient (more than four visits or greater than six months) of a BC Women's Hospital physician, or if the woman has had her previous baby at BCWH.

Physicians provide care in a number of ways that include:

  • Community Physicians: Many physicians have community practices and are able to offer women full maternity care as well as, in some cases, full family practice care.
  • Family Practice Centre: These health practitioners offer full service primary health care in the setting of an on site UBC Family Practice Teaching unit. They also provide support for the Aurora Clinic and for families from out of town.
  • Perinatal Addictions Service: This service, located in the Ambulatory Clinic at BC Women's Hospital, provides pregnancy care to women struggling with addictions, and is available on Thursdays from 9 - noon and 1 - 4 or by appointment (604-875-2160).  Referrals are not required and all pregnant women with addiction issues are welcome - no matter where you live.

Women requiring more intensive treatment may be admitted to Fir Square, the in-patient unit at BC Women's.  The physician on call for Fir Square can be reached by calling 604-875-2161 and asking to speak with the Perinatal Addictions Physician.

The Sheway Project (533 East Hastings Street; 604-216-1699) offers support to pregnant and parenting women who live in Vancouver and are struggling with drug addiction.  Drop in Monday to Friday between 11:30am - 3:30pm for lunch, advocacy, addictions treatment, infant development consultation, housing support and medical care by a Perinatal Addictions Physician.
  • South Community Birth Program: This team of physicians, registered midwives, community health nurses, and doulas work collaboratively to offer comprehensive care to expectant women and new mothers.
  • Youth Pregnancy Program: Housed at Evergreen Community Health Centre, this program, developed by two Family Physicians, provides teen pregnancy support and community resources.
